Dr. Ramli Ismail Profile

Dr. Ramli Ismail’s career started in 2003 as a research assistant in the Faculty of Science, UTM. He was accepted to be a chemistry tutor (and later promoted as a lecturer) in UPSI and in 2005, Dr. Ramli completed his Master’s in UKM.

His IT career took off in 2011 where he completed his PhD in Computational Chemistry in the University of Birmingham, UK. From there, Dr. Ramli furthered his interest as a coding research associate in Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Stuttgart, Germany, where he focused on the fundamental research in chemistry.

Having studied and worked in Europe, Dr. Ramli noted that IT was a field well integrated into almost all principles, especially in the sciences. “As much as IT is often regarded as a standalone specialty, it is in fact a much more powerful tool when integrated into other disciplines,” says Dr. Ramli. “It’s capable of being the catalyst that advances a well-thought-out purpose, for example in medical, education and so forth.”

Upon his return to Malaysia, Dr. Ramli further realised the importance of IT integration, which was why he chose UNIMY as the place to pursue his interest. “UNIMY specialises in IT, which to me is an interesting idea. That’s why I took up the challenge to be part of its teaching faculty,” he says.

He joined as an assistant professor in chemistry for foundation studies in 2013, making him one of the pioneers in the university’s teaching faculty. He was promoted as Dean, Centre for Foundation Studies in 2015. Two years later, he was appointed as Dean, Centre for Student Experience where he was in charge of developing student engagement programmes to help enrich the learning experience in UNIMY.

Today, Dr. Ramli is the Acting Vice Chancellor where he oversees every aspect of the university’s operation from marketing to student welfare, academic delivery and more.

He says, “UNIMY adopts a modern education approach to allow a flexible learning environment for our students. The institution strongly advocates and adopts online learning. The institution strongly advocates and adopts online learning. With Open Learning, students interact with lecturers through fun and meaningful activities. With it being a specialised IT university, the population is rather intimate, allowing students and lecturers to forge a close relationship. This I feel is the unique quality behind UNIMY.”
